Out with the Old, in with the New Version of vSphere

Andrea Ferrone

Will you be ready? VMware vSphere 5.5 will be going end of general support on September 19, 2018. What’s next? VMware vSphere 6.5 is the answer. Today is the day to begin talking about upgrading to the latest version, and there’s still time to make the switch without skipping a beat.

VMware vSphere has quickly become the industry-leading virtualization platform, providing a powerful, flexible, and secure foundation for business agility. With vSphere 6.5, you can now run, manage, connect, and secure your applications in a common operating environment across clouds and devices. The goal here is to simplify the customer experience, provide built-in security to protect infrastructure, and create a universal app platform that can be run anywhere, anytime. Customers all over the globe are making the switch to VMware as a solution for their IT needs.

The City of North Las Vegas in Clark County, Nevada, is just one of many success stories where VMware was able to develop a well-rounded virtualized solution to help transform the city into an economic power house. At the time, the city was struggling to modernize their current technology, provide emergency services with flexible information access, and give IT staff efficient operating tools to improve productivity—all while trying to reduce operating costs at the same time. As you can tell, this was not going to be easy.

Once the business challenges were mapped out, the City of North Las Vegas worked with VMware engineers to virtualize servers, desktops, storage, and firewalls. This was possible because of the product mix that was designed to manage each component of the transformation to a software-defined data center. VMware used a combination of vSphere Enterprise Plus 6.5, Horizon 7.2, NSX 6.3 Adv, and vSAN 6.6 to help the city create an entirely new approach for solving IT needs. In a matter of four years, the power of VMware solutions enabled a 22-person division to perform IT operations—when similar municipalities have 70+ IT employees. In addition, North Las Vegas was able to realize a 7,000 percent increase in jobs, a 2,000 percent increase in new business space, and 4,000 percent increase in new capital investment. They’ve gained an estimated savings of $100,000 over three years for every 125 PCs that were moved to virtual desktops. This is a great example to help demonstrate the capabilities of vSphere in combination with Horizon and NSX in order to simplify, standardize, and streamline technology.

There are many more use cases where vSphere has been used to leverage success, and right now you have the ability to write your very own success story. It’s your time to grow your business and become part of the worldwide movement to a next-generation infrastructure. Do you want to reduce your IT costs by 53%? How about a 54% decrease in downtime of tier-one applications? Or maybe 2.4x return on investment within one year? If that interests you, vSphere 6.5 and vSphere with Operations Management is your answer, and it’s only a matter of time before you’ll have to make the switch, so why wait? Today, you could have 30% improvement in visibility, availability, capacity utilization, and user satisfaction within IT.
